What is IS 5568?

The Israel Standard 5568 or IS 5568 is Israel’s official set of web accessibility regulations that has been in effect since October 2017. This standard follows the WCAG 2.0 Level AA.

Who are affected by this regulation?

This web accessibility law covers all Israeli-created websites that are publicly or privately owned, have been online since the year 2017, have more than 300,000 NIS annual revenue or businesses that have a gross revenue of over 1 million NIS.

In general, it affects all kinds of websites that operated by the government and even those run by foreign companies. All websites should be accessible.

Penalties for non-compliance with IS 5568

In comparison with other countries that also have their own web accessibility law, IS 5568 can be more problematic for websites that are covered by this regulation and are non-compliant. Complainants can file statutory damages of up to 50,000 NIS by simply evidencing that the website is non-compliant with the IS 5568 without the need to prove to court that they incurred any damage or loss due to the website being inaccessible.

Complying with IS 5568

If you are from the private or public sector, and you want your websites to be compliant with the IS 5568 then it needs to achieve the WCAG 2.0 level AA. This would also entail different fixes and adjustments based on the media formats that you are using and the size of your business.

With the IS 5568’s goal of eliminating any barriers, people with disabilities will be able to access and engage in your websites as it has become more accessible.

  • Nice to know that more countries are now getting more serious when it comes to website accessibility. Kudos to Israel for this! 👏👏👏

  • It’s high time that countries also recognize the need to make the web more accessible for users with disabilities. I hope other nations do the same move. 🙏
